Matt Farley, the renaissance man behind the vast artistic empire of Motern Media, has been making movies with his friend Charlie Roxburgh for 25 years. These movies, all of which feature casts composed of family and personal friends, cost about the price of a used car, and none of them have turned a profit. They’re also incredibly good. Local Legends, a rare solo venture, is a fictionalized auto-biopic that follows Matt Farley as he records songs, plays basketball, and tries to put together a concert, is among the most grounded films in the Motern Catalog.

This isn’t to say that it doesn’t have its share of idiosyncrasies, not least of which include scenes in which the “artist” and “businessman” sides of Matt Farley spar over questions of artistic integrity. The sequel, Local Legends: Bloodbath, continues in the same thematic vein, but is different in ways which you might infer from the title.
