Full of high-energy chases, brutal violence, and a grounded vision of the future, Akira is a sensory feast for any fan of action, science fiction, or animation.
Akira is one of the most influential pieces of media ever put to film. Its creation irrevocably affected the landscape of animation and helped proliferate anime to nations outside of Japan. The psychic tendrils of its legacy continue to touch writers, musicians, and filmmakers to this day. It is a film that could only have been so vibrantly successful in the medium of animation; We Luv Video is proud to present Akira as its inaugural offering for Animondays.

Cindy Popp Presents Seven Deadly Scenes: Idle Hands (Sloth)
All Anton wants to do is lie in bed, watch tv, and have hot broads deliver him food—relatable! This kid is too lazy and stoned to notice that his parents are dead and he was the one who killed them.
Devon Sawa gives a truly hilarious performance, playing not only himself but also his possessed right hand. It’s no wonder that this 1999 teen horror comedy has become a cult classic with its demented mix of stoner slapstick and gross-out gore.
Fourth in my series “Seven Deadly Scenes” where I explore movies about all our favorite vices. Come check them out at We Luv Video! BYOB, tickets are $5, popcorn and snacks available!
SunGAY: Death on the Beach
Death on the Beach is an early 90's horror film centered around a poor little rich boy who is also a gay serial killer, written and directed by queer filmmaker Enrique Gómez Vadillo.
Both a metaphor for the harms of familial homophobia and supremely silly, Death on the Beach is rife with men in speedos, horribly hetero love scenes, and telenovela logic.
You will leave this film with a new favorite killer! Just don't ask him if he's gay....he might push you over the edge (of a cliff... or a balcony... or any ledge, really).
More on ASHWELL:

Donnie Darko: Hoodie Contest and Screening
28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds until the end of the world…
This is the circumstance of Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) and it seems with every passing year our society grows to share the same sentiment. With its wide release having been only a month or so after 9/11 it is a perfect film for this millennia.
Unfortunately for us, being plagued by visions of a terrifying rabbit-being named Frank (James Duval) isn’t part of our doomsday clock, that is of course unless you come out October 19th to see this low key Halloween cult classic.
We’re asking you to wear your best hoodie for this one. You may win FREE WLV merch. Who knows.
Scary Movie Screening and Q&A w/ Director Daniel Erickson
Only a handful of movies have captured the zeitgeist of Austin in the 1990s— this one did so to such an extent that then Austin Mayor, Bruce Todd, declared October 18th "Scary Movie Day." We’ve got the receipts. No, not that Scary Movie, although there's a great story involved in the title. Let director Daniel Erickson tell you all about it—in person.
Hands down, this is one of the best Halloween movies ever made (right here in Austin)—so come enjoy a Shiner Bock or two. Grab a FREE limited-edition poster (who knows, maybe Daniel Erickson will sign it?), and immerse yourself in the Austin of the 1990s through the eyes of Warren, a perpetually paranoid dork played by a then-unknown actor, John Hawkes—who just received an Emmy nod in 2024. Everything comes together in Scary Movie, with stunning set design by poster icon Danny Garrett, a rip-roaring score that includes The Butthole Surfers, and surreal plot twists, all incorporating into a film that punches far above its modest budget.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: 50th Anniversary Screening
Come celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Texas Chain Saw Massacre at We Luv Video on Oct. 11, 2024 (the exact release date 50 years ago!!)
This is Tobe Hooper's magnum opus. This is peak horror. It's your favorite horror movie's favorite horror movie. If you've procrastinated watching this classic this is your chance to see it at no place other than your local video store!
We'll have BBQ plates available and exclusive merch for this screening. There also might be some weird hitchhiker taking pictures of people? Stay safe folks. Find out WHO WILL SURVIVE AND WHAT WILL BE LEFT OF THEM!
Decades later, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre remains a film of such brutal intensity, such visceral majesty, that it is still being unpacked by film writers, revered and imitated and absorbed by filmmakers. It's a film so potent that it was banned in the UK for its extremity, even though there is barely a drop of blood to be seen. — Richard Whitaker for the Austin Chronicle. August 28th, 2017

Shock Treatment
Shock Treatment is Richard O’Brien’s often overlooked or forgotten follow up to Rocky Horror Picture Show. Satirizing the consumerism of the 80s and predicting the mind-melting power of reality TV, taking place entirely within a TV station in Denton, USA (but also the TV station IS Denton), this musical was way ahead of its time.
Colorful, silly, and full of catchy tunes, you’ll get home and start bitchin’ in the kitchen that you can’t watch more episodes of Farley Flavors’ Faith Factory.
We Luv Video’s screening of Shock Treatment includes a costume contest, drag performances, call backs in the spirit of Rocky Horror, and prop bags. Audience participation encouraged! Leave the kiddos at home, this is an 18+ screening.
Sungay: Michael
It’s not every year that a queer film turns 100… so SunGays is forgoing our usual silly gay films for something a bit more serious (but just as homo, don’t worry). Join us for Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Michael, a silent German film about a romance between a painter and his model.
The homosexual undertones upset viewers of the 1920s, which nearly guarantees that we’ll be delighted! We’ll ooh and aah at the German Expressionism, marvel at just how gay things were a century ago, and maybe cry a tiny bit about gay loneliness… together! Free tissues will be provided
Double Feature: Psycho Ape I & II
Once upon a Rind in Hollywood… there was a little movie called PSYCHO APE!
With a modest budget of $7,205.05 (raised via Kickstarter) filmmakers Addison Binek & Greg DeLiso created a bonafide, cult classic. With over 1,000 discs sold, a special edition VHS release from Lunchmeat, trading cards galore, and screenings around the country, PSYCHO APE! hastaken on a life of its own.
So, naturally the filmmakers decided to cash in, baby!
PSYCHO APE!! PART II THE WRATH OF KONG - “a movie that appears to accidentally make itself as it goes.” - Addison Binek. This time, with double the budget, $14,000, (raised via Indiegogo), creators Binek & DeLiso lean into the meta deconstructionism side of the guy-in-cheap-gorilla-costume schlockfest.
This one features less gore, less nudity and more parodies of A Few Good Men!
With a “plot” that zips along faster than a Chiquita, and featuring a cavalcade of stars that will babswoon your untamed heart.
Starring Kansas Bowling (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Verotika, Murdercise) and Bill Weeden (Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D.) Peter Stickles (Short Bus) Galen Howard (Star Wars: Book of Boba Fett) featuring Philip Proctor, Dylan Mars Greenberg, and John Karyus (Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead).
The Ripper
We Luv Video takes you to SOV school with The RIPPER!
SFX legend Tom Savini plays the titular Jack the Ripper, and he's definitely up for it. Witness haunted rings, throat slashings galore, fog-drenched flashbacks, and more spandex arabic dance sequences than you can shake a razor at.
Come celebrate the glory days of the shot-on-video horror era with this demented gem of the genre!
We solemnly swear that we will be running the restoration and NOT our host Sarah’s played-to-death VHS copy, though it will definitely be in attendance on the night.
Odd World Presents: Tammy and the T-Rex
This months installment of Odd World finds us exploring quite possibly one of the greatest “bad” movies ever made. Tammy and the T- Rex! Join Moving Picture House as we watch baby faced Paul Walker try to figure out how to live again now that he has been turned into a sex crazed robotic dinosaur after he was eaten by lions!
Denise Richards stars as our titular Tammy and brings the looks and charm while trying to figure out how to help her newly headless boyfriend navigate his robo Dino world and get the girl! This is an insane and insanely entertaining flick and we will be watching the recently discovered “gore cut” which has re inserted all of the violence that was cut to get a PG13 on release! Free beer courtesy of St. Elmo Brewery!
Metropolis Live Score w/ David DiDonato
David DiDonato will perform his soundtrack for Fritz Lang's Metropolis, 1927. This will be DiDonato's final performance as the artist in residence. DiDonato, a long time Austin music scene contributor and world record holder for the longest guitar, has performed 4 other self composed soundtracks in We Luv Video's micro theatre.
The residency program hopes to illuminate Austin artists working across diverse mediums while embracing video and film. The next artist in residency will be Rome Prize Winning artist Abinadi Meza, another Austin local. For more information about DiDonato's final performance visit weluvvideo org. For more information about the residency email bryan@weluvvideo.org.
Local Legends Double Feature & Q+A w/ Director Matt Farley
Local Legends Local Legends: Bloodbath 7 PM, September 20th, featuring a Q&A from the filmmaker.
Matt Farley, the renaissance man behind the vast artistic empire of Motern Media, has been making movies with his friend Charlie Roxburgh for 25 years. These movies, all of which feature casts composed of family and personal friends, cost about the price of a used car, and none of them have turned a profit. They’re also incredibly good. Local Legends, a rare solo venture, is a fictionalized auto-biopic that follows Matt Farley as he records songs, plays basketball, and tries to put together a concert, is among the most grounded films in the Motern Catalog.
This isn’t to say that it doesn’t have its share of idiosyncrasies, not least of which include scenes in which the “artist” and “businessman” sides of Matt Farley spar over questions of artistic integrity. The sequel, Local Legends: Bloodbath, continues in the same thematic vein, but is different in ways which you might infer from the title.

Adaptations Book Club: Wuthering Heights
